Milan to Bucharest by train?
Recommendations for which TRAIN route to take from Milano to
Bucuresti ? I also see that flying to Timisoara is cheaper than Bucharest. Maybe, but you couldn't end up further from Bucuresti while still being in the same country. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 http://www.campin.me.uk Twitter: JackCampin |

Might still go there, as I have a friend there. |

If you want to avoid the OBB EC bus replacements, there are a couple of FUC day trains from Udine to Villach (707 and 1717) there are two options a day changing at Zurich I tend to regard going north (to Switzerland) to get east to Vienna (and furher east to Bucarest) as both ineffective and expensive and several at Verona and Innsbruck Yes, the Brenner way is more natural to go to Austria (Innsbruck or Salzburg), but still a bit innatural to go east to Vienna. And unfortunately there are no more through trains from Milan (which used to exist, I caught them often for Munich) but one is forced to change in Verona (the DB trains come from Bologna or Venice) The natural way for Vienna (at least since northern Italy belonged to the Austrian empire) is via Tarvisio-Villach. There used to be both several day intercity trains, as well as local trains Villach-Tarvisio. As I said the funny (?) thing is that they refurbished completely the Pontebbana railway (putting a cycle path on the old railway) and for unclear reasons all daytime international train disappeared, and OBB is running a bus ! Just recently they re-introduced this couple of trains from Udine to Villach http://www.ferrovieudinecividale.it/progetto-mi-co-tra you may like this motto http://messaggeroveneto.gelocal.it/p..._558/image.jpg |

You would have a lot of time to see the landscape. I once traveled from Venice to Sibiu by car, I needed two days. True and worth considering. However, I did say I preferred train; I did find longer (forty hours) trip with only one or two changes, and Envo still got the "24 hours" wrong, presumably because he/she only looked at the dates. I decided to take Rick Steve's advice, saving costs by sleeping an night trains and thereby freeing up days to see things in cities between trains. Someone carried that idea a step further: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/08/22/how-one-german-millennial-chose-to-live-on-trains-rather-than-pay-rent/ |

Frankfurt International is 14km from the city center, Dusseldorf International is just 10km from the center. Linate is indeed about 10 km from the centre of Milan. It is true that BGY and MXP are the same distance, but the former has only coach via motorway direct connection, the latter has trains (*). But nothing beats Linate which has urban bus and affordable taxi. If you have a flight from Paris to Santiago around midnight, and in the middle of the afternoon you realize on the TV teletext that the connecting flight from Milan is going to be altered because of a strike, you can pack hastily and run to Linate and try (and succeed) to be put on an earlier flight. You can hardly do that with MXP. (*) the main fact is that such trains depart from 2 (3) different stations. This makes no difference when you arrive at MXP, you catch the first train to Milan (wherever) and then continue by metro. But when you are leaving, you have to decide in advance where you take the train from Cadorna or the train from Garibaldi (from Centrale it is just a waste of time via the "umbrella handle"), so actually the frequency is halved. |
