Reef 'tax on tax' removed.
Wednesday March 10, 09:03 AM
Travelpress: Reef ‘tax on tax’ removed A "tax on a tax" that has been paid by visitors to the Great Barrier Reef is to be scrapped. A law removing the GST from the marine park's environmental tax has been passed by the Senate, AAP reported. Tourist operators had been fighting for the change for several years, claiming the tax on a tax was unfair. Revenue Minister Helen Coonan said the tax office was considering the matter of returning to operators any GST that had been paid, the report said. The Barrier Reef is believed to attract about two million visitors each year and is considered one of the most popular ecotourism sites in the world. |
