Default Driving in Turkey

Is it advisable to rent a car and drive in Turkey? Three of us want to travel
from Istanbul to Kusadasi and surrounding area and also to Ankara. I have
driven in many countries in Europe including Italy and Greece. What other
modes of transportation are available? Any help is welcome.

Thanks

Default Driving in Turkey

Samar,
We rented a car for 3 weeks. Roads are good - drivers are crazy (but not
much more so than in Italy) - but driving in the cities can be frustrating -
mainly because there are few road signs.

We drove Istanbul to Gallipoli - ferry to Canakkale, to Bergama, Izmir,
Ephesus, Kusadasi, Konya, Cappadocia, Sivas, Amasya then returned the car in
Ankara.

Bus services are also good - but driving yourself gives to freedom to go
where you like for as long as you like.

Did you post this in rec.travel.europe?? Probably a more appropriate forum!

We also drove right across Turkey too with a hire car, and had no problems
whatsoever. Bus services are really quite good also, and there are some
great day tours out of about every single city you find in Turkey.

You will have the best flexibility though when driving yourself - without a
doubt!
