Happy birthday Tintin!
(Photo Hergé-Moulinsart 2006)
Sat 10/01/09 17:40 - On January 10, 1929 Tintin first appeared in Le
Petit Vingtième, a supplement for children in the Belgian Francophone
daily Le Vingtième Siècle. The boy reporter was immediately a national
hero. Set in a painstakingly researched world closely mirroring our
own, the series has continued as a favourite of readers and critics
alike for over 80 years now.

The adventurous boy reporter's first trip was to the fledgling Soviet
Union. His first adventures became the Tintin in the Land of the
Soviets comic book.

This was the first of 24 comics about the boy reporter that would gain
him and his creator George Remi, alias Hergé, world fame. More than
230 million Tintin comic books have been sold and Tintin's adventures
have been translated into some 80 different languages.

Tintin, Snowy the dog, and his other friends and foes have now long
outlived the Soviet Union and the 20th century -- as well as their
Belgian creator Hergé, who died in 1983.

Little has changed, though, about Tintin from those early black and
white days. His features became more refined and warm pastel colours
were added. His round face and trademark cowlick though, have always
underscored his youth.

"Tintin is not 80. He will always be fifteen and a half -- he doesn't
age," said Stefan Steeman, a collector of Tintin memorabilia and
president of the Friends of Hergé.

Tintin is still as popular as ever. His appeal has proved timeless
even though his adventures often mirrored historical events.

What is Tintin called in other languages? A few examples:

* Tintin (Danish, English, French, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian,
Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Slovakian, Swedish, ...)
* Kuifje (Dutch)
* Tenten (Greek, Persian, Turkish)
* Tim (German)
* Tinni (Icelandic)
* Titinus (Latin)
* ...

A the moment American director Steven Spielberg is filming a trilogy
on Tintin's adventures, with the permission of Fanny Rodwell, Hergé's
widow.

The 18 year old British actor Thomas Sangster is playing the
adventurous red-headed boy reporter.

The first part is expected in the cinemas this year.
