Budget accomodations in/near Honolulu.

I'm planning a trip to Honolulu to visit a friend and need cheap
accomodations. Are there any budget motels that rent by the week? What about
hostels? I'm on a shoe string budget, so I don't care about amenities. I
just ask that it be clean and in a relatively safe area.

Is it possible to find someone willing to rent a room for a week or so?

I'm willing to travel up to half an hour, it doesn't have to be IN Honolulu.

Also, I've heard you can get air fare for as little as $200 round trip from
L.A. When is the best time of year to get these kind of specials?
