all the counties (or equivalents, such as parishes and independent cities)
in 19 of them + D.C., with the most thorough coverage west of the Rockies
and east of the Appalachians.

Wow, how could you possibly remember all the counties you'd been to?

I remembered the routes I've driven, before I'd begun tracking my counties
in a more organized fashion a few years ago. Then I went back to the road
atlases to figure out which counties I'd passed through.

In the Midwest, my travels have been largely limited to the Interstates, so
that part was easy.
