Default you just can't get the staff

http://www.flandersnews.be/cm/de.red...2_supermarkets

Wed 02/04/08 - Some supermarket chains are having a tough time finding
staff prepared to work on 2 May. 2008 is something of a strange year
in that Labour Day and Assumption both fall on 1 May. Initially, the
government had proposed a one-off extra bank holiday on 2 May to
compensate.

However, this idea was shelved and companies are free to decide when
they will give their staff a day off in lieu of their lost bank
holiday.
(Belga)

Jan Delfosse of the retail and distribution federation Fedis told the
VRT that most companies have already reached agreement with their
staff.

However, elsewhere management has met with a veto from the trades
unions.

Mr Delfosse added that it's important that the shops are allowed to
open.

"It's traditionally a high turnover day with first communion and
confirmation parties, as well as many people having barbecues or
working in their gardens."

The supermarket chains Delhaize and Carrefour have both decided not to
open on 2 May.

However, other stores such as Colruyt and Lidl have offered their
employees bonuses to work on Friday 2 May.

Colruyt is offering its staff double time and a day off in lieu, while
Lidl is offering its staff five times the normal rate of pay.
"We understand"

Unions representing workers in the retail sector say that many of
their members had already made plans to enjoy a long weekend.

Union spokesman Chris Van Droogenbroeck told the VRT that "We said
straight away that no one should be forced to work on 2 May."

"We do understand the situation in the shops. However, anyone that has
to work should be given a bonus."
