Default Australians must stop travel to third world countries.

Australians must stop travel to third world countries.

Look at Bali for example - there is terrorism, child molestation, and
wrongful drug arrests.

People think it is glamourous to go to places like Thailand and Bali -
until they get life imprisonment for a minor crime that they did not commit.

Look: it is not fun to go to third world countries. It is not
interesting. You WILL get into trouble. You WILL get
arrested/diseased/kidnapped.

How about cancelling the ridiculous elephant-back trip around Africa or
Asia and LIMIT TRAVEL TO OECD COUNTRIES. GET IT?

I'm sick of dickheads who say that if you don't need 10 vaccinations and
an armed escort, it isn't real travel. That is just plain RETARDED.

"Look at Bali for example - there is terrorism, child molestation, and
wrongful drug arrests."

There were terrorist attacks in New York, London, Madrid, and Oklahoma
City, so maybe you shouldn't go to America or Europe either.

Child molestation sadly occurs in First World countries as well as
Third World. It's very easy to avoid the sex trade if you aren't
seeking it out, even in Thailand.

Wrongful drug arrests are very rare. There are ten million visitors to
Thailand every year - how many of them are convicted of drug crimes
that they are innocent of? The real reason hundreds of Westerners are
doing time in Thai prisons is that Thailand can be very harsh on even
minor drug crimes. Minor possession that in the US or Australia would
probably not even be charged or get someone probation might result in a
long-term prison sentence in Thailand. Lots of Westerners use drugs
there anyway, ignoring the risks.

"I'm sick of dickheads who say that if you don't need 10 vaccinations
and an armed escort, it isn't real travel. That is just plain
RETARDED."

Post that on the Lonely Planet website's Thorn Tree discussion board if
you really want to get a response.

Plural on drug arrests implies that you are certain that the dickheads
with
"H" strapped to their bodies are innocent. Sorry, but the rest of your
post
warrants no further serious consideration.

pharro

And you made no offer of any refutation but that gibberish.

I agree with the first guy..

Oh yes, first guy is right - no Australian has ever imported drugs in or out
of a third world country. It's all a conspiracy. Pass the calomine... my
neck is blistering.

I am yet to see any substantive evidence that they have done this, just
because corby is an ausie hardly automatically makes her innocent, her
explanation is actually not the least bit logical, three kilos of dope is
hardly worth the effort for organised crime to risk using a mark, maybe for
other drugs but there just isn't enough profit margin in dope, besides a
sophisticated drug cartel would be smuggling the drugs into australia where
its street value is nearly six times as much as in south east asia, whereas
a lone twit with more ambition than nous *is* likely to take it the other
way. Besides she has already lied at least once when she claimed never
touched the drug, as that came out of her mouth her own body language quite
clearly called her a liar.

post substantive evidence of this claim please

Only if your an extremely type person, in this case either extremely unlucky
or extremely stupid

Um the OECD includes many of those same countries, exactly what do you think
the organisation (for) economic co-operation and development exists for
anyway.

On this we agree, but why is writing off any trip that might expand ones
world view any different than them writing off domestic holidays.

You need to learn your geography etter, Bali doesnt count as a third world
country!

I still believe she is guilty

If they could prove they hadnt committed it they wouldnt be in jail and
because they have jail instead of death the court has recognized there are
issues.

Besides, not a single one of our overseas detainees can claim "arrest under
false pretenses", they were found with the drugs on them or admitted to
sleeping with someone of the same gender or with someone who turned out to
be a minor.

Fully agree. You can definately go and emjoy other countries ut use some
common sense! Sleeping with a stranger is not a good idea here in Australia
why is it suddenly ok overseas? Taking drugs is illegal in Australia why
would you assume it is ok else where?

There is no such thing as first and third world countries anymore -
it's either developed or developing. This aside, I just don't
understand where this post came from?? Let people go wherever they want
to, and if they are stupid enough to take drugs with them then let them
suffer the consequences. As for people being falsely arrested and
imprisoned, that happens everywhere.

If you want to get really specific take Schapelle Corby for instance -
she either took the drugs herself or someone in Australian Customs
planted them. Either way this is an Australian problem, not an
Indonesian one. If Corby is innocent then it seriously is a terrible
situation, but it's not Indonesia's fault in any way.

The real truth is, that as long as people hold to be true the ignorant
and insensitive notions displayed in this topic it isn't going to be
safe to go anywhere.

Wrong on both counts. It's fun, and also heartbreaking. Highly
educational too. I guess you're happy living in your little box.

You WILL get into trouble. You WILL get arrested/diseased/kidnapped.

Spent three months in Southeast Asia almost a year ago. Got ripped off a
few times. Didn't get diseased, or arrested, or kidnapped.
