Default Saigon or Ho Chi Minh city?

What would be the "right" name? A Google search returns 9550000 hits for
Saigon, but just 2780000 for "Ho Chi Minh".

If you are part of the [North] Vietnamese apparatchik, you call the
[shanty]town to as is appropriate to honour late Uncle Ho otherwise it
doesn't matter. Either way and Google searches well.

Wikipedia uses "Ho Chi Minh city" which seems to be the technically
correct, but less used term.

Yes. You say the same thing by slightly different words. I guess that
mudhole has had several names in the past.

Depends on where you are. If you are in Vietnam then it's HCM. If
you are anywhere in north america or europe with large expat viet
populations, be careful because if you use HCM you risk getting beat
up.

The English speaking page knows to tell that when the city was founded it
was named as Prey Nokor. No, Nokor is not a game animal but Prey Nokor means
"Forest city".

Well, I'm in the process of setting up a photo gallery about this city
and am wondering how I should call it.

technically Ho Chi Minh City is the name for the metro area

Saigon still exists, it is the core area that existed pre-war, and
that area is still Saigon. It lies within the larger metro area of Ho
Chi Minh City

Kind of like how New York City has boroughs

Most of the people I talked to there called it Saigon. Then again,
that's a self-selected group: people who speak English. Their sympathies
and leanings may or may not differ from the mainstream.
