Cheap Phoenix Motel

I'm passing through, and would prefer a quiet, cheap place. I like
old-fashioned Route 66 type motels. Clean, and not one where people come in all
night renting by the hour. Thanks in advance for advice.

The old route of US-60 used to pass very near the airport and
there are a number of motels sort of near the airport on
Washington and Van Buren, but I'm not sure how accessible they
might be from the airport. A lot of the old motels from the
pre-freeway days also exist nearby in Tempe, but again access
might be a problem. If you were driving I would tell you to
cruise until you find something accpetable, but I gather you will
need to know in advance. Since I never have to find lodging near
the airport I can't come up with any names, although a friend
stayed at a Super 8 nearby; it wasn't 1950s though. Perhaps some
Pheonicians who drive by there regularly can give you a hint.

www.hotwire.com has places starting at $24 per night. Priceline might be
even better!

As a follow-up, I checked a random date for the Phoenix Airport area, and
they have a 3-star place for $37 a night, a 2-star place for $38 a night,
and a 1-star place for $39 a night. My personal preference would be to
take the 3-star and pay less, but if you like 1-star type places, then only
2 bucks more is not that bad a deal.
