The FCO's consular service is a major operation. Every hour of every
day our consular staff around the world are helping British nationals.
It is one of the most important parts of the Government's foreign
policy. In 2002, our 1,700 consular staff helped over 53,200 British
travellers and issued over 450,000 passports. The Travel section of
this website contains a wealth of information for anyone planning a
trip overseas. Our Country Advice is based on the best and most
up-to-date information available to us. The advice is designed to help
British travellers and citizens to take their own decisions about
their travel plans. It deliberately focuses on the potential risks and
problems involved in travel overseas. But the overwhelming majority of
