Default Information about Taipei

This is going to be my first trip to Taipei. I will be there
in a month. It is time to book a hotel and I need help.

I have been checking hotels on the internet. However,
my main problem is to find a nice neighborhood where
to stay. This is basically the help that I am looking for.

There are good hotels very near the main train station
and the subway. Is this neighborhood fun and "safe"
to walk around at any time? Are there "better" places
than this?

I love to walk and I enjoy using public transportation.
I don't mind taking taxis, but public transportation puts
me in contact with many different people, which I
enjoy observing [I don't speak the language.]

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The main train station has some fine hotels, the Hilton is right there
too. That area of town has a lot of MTV and Karaoke bars and is quite
good fun. Lots of things close by too so probably easier to wonder
around than some parts of Taipei.

I was in Taipei for over two years and never had a problem with
safety. The same basic common sense rules as anywhere apply but I'd be
quite happy out and about in that area any time of day or night.

Taking public transport at peak times can be a squeeze, but off peak
is fine. If you don't speak or read any chinese, it is trickier, but
Taipei has more english speaking people than the mainland, most
younger people can speak enough to help you.
