Default Cozumel to open to cruise ships 11/14

Here is a selected quote:

The Mayor of Cozumel Gustavo Ortega met this morning with the cruise line
representatives of Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Lines and the owners of
stores on the main front and tour operators of Cozumel. After listening to
the reports on the status of the island, tour operators and store owners
made a commitment to the cruise lines and set up a date to start receiving
Cruise Ship passengers starting on NOVEMBER 14 2005.

As of the Cruise lines representatives will be scheduling the first cruise
ship arrivals to Cozumel starting on November 14 2005 using tenders to get
the passengers from the ship to town where they are not able to dock on the
piers that are already under reconstruction where damaged. Stores located on
the main avenue of Cozumel and the first downtown area should be fully
working by November 14 200 too. Tour operators will be reporting this next
days until November 14 about the status of each tour trying to ensure full
operation by this date.

We are set to go on the Miracle Jan 8th. If we have to tender will
the cruiselines try to spend more time in port to allow passengers
more time to do thier thing (spend thier money)?

Any TAs that can find this out?

Actually tendering makes the stops smaller as there is more involved in
getting underway ansd till the same distance to the next port.

I spent some time the other day talking with someone at Carnival and right
now, they are still assessing the situation and aren't giving any hard and
fast answers. FWIW, neither is Royal Caribbean and NCL has yet to even
acknowledge that there was a hurricane at all. vbg

I got the impression that Carnival isn't going to rush things. The ports at
Progreso, Costa Maya, Playa del Carmen and Veracruz are all open for
business and suitable substitutes. Right now, Carnival is only announcing
itinerary changes for cruises departing through October 31.

Here is their latest bulletin which just came out about 2 hours ago:

Tropical Weather Update - October 28, 2005 6:00 PM

Due to the impact from Hurricane Wilma in Cozumel, we will make the
following itinerary changes to cruises this weekend.

Elation October 27 from Galveston - This cruise will visit Progreso (Sat.)

Inspiration October 29 from Tampa - This cruise will visit Grand Cayman
(Mon.) and Costa Maya (Tue.)

Carnival Miracle October 30 from Tampa - This cruise will visit Grand Cayman
(Tue.), Costa Maya (Wed.) and Belize (Thur.)

UPDATE- Carnival Conquest October 30 from Galveston - The scheduled call in
Cozumel will be replaced by a visit to Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Carnival Valor October 30 from Miami - The scheduled call in Cozumel will be
replaced with Costa Maya

UPDATE - Fascination October 31 from Miami - This cruise will visit Key West
(Tue.) and Playa del Carmen, Mexico (Wed.)

Elation October 31 from Galveston - This cruise will visit Progreso (Wed.)
and Veracruz (Thur.)

I doubt that passengers who go ashore at Cozumel are going to get a
great experience by November 14. Last year I was on Carnival Miracle
after the hurricane that hit Freeport and Freeport was pretty much a
waste. They were not able to do most of the ship excursions. Only a few
stores were open. No doubt Cozumel wants to get cruise passengers back
as soon as possible and that may be good for the Mayor but not that
good for cruise passengers. Besides having to tender many major venues
are not going to be ready. I was just reading a press release from the
group that owns Senior Frogs and Carlos and Charlies. They don't expect
to reopen for six to eight months. That is just one example.
