1st trip to Hawaii, with kids. Need help choosing.
I am going to Hawaii, with my wife, my mother-in-law, and my daughter
3, and my son 1. The wife wants to do something along the lines of a 4star, she was looking at the Marriott resort and spa, on Honolulu. Can anyone recommend for or against this place? Or other places? I'd prefer to have a room that is more of a 'suite' for a little bit of privacy. Better than a room with two beds next to each other, and cheaper than getting two rooms. We will go for one week, in May. I'd love any ideas or recommendations. Thanks! |

Take some time to wander through these two web-sites: www.expedia.com www.tripadvisor.com The first is useful to get an idea of the real prices, as against "rack-rates". It also gives hotel locations by map. The second is useful to see what others have said about specific hotels - just keep in mind that they are subjective and unchecked comments. For example, this is the report page for Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...hu_Hawaii.html But I'd look at some of the others as well. The prices are significantly higher than some other equivalents. I've gone totally the other way and I'll be staying at the Royal Grove. Cheap but good, according to tripadvisor. You might also want to consider whether or not the hotel/condo you choose has the amenities you want (pool, spa, etc.) and the hours those things are open. I took my family to Hawaii last summer and stayed the Beachcomber during one portion of our trip. It was disappointing that the hotel pool closed around 6 or 7. That was just about sundown. We far preferred using the pool in the evening after a day of sightseeing. But didn't get to at that place. Beyond that, the Beachcomber was a good hotel. Right across from Waikiki beach and convenient to everything in the area. IMO, the Halekulani, Royal Hawaiian, Surfrider (among others) looked excellent and would consider those should I be able to return with wifey only. |

My parents liked their apartment like room (studio with a kitchen/ they
have 1 & 2 bdrms also) at the Ilima. Although it's a ten minute walk to the beach. |

Sorry, the Ilima isn't a 4 star (2 or 3 maybe). How about the Hilton
Hawaiian Village? |

The question is, do you want to be in the heart of a tourist mecca where a hundred hotels are packed into a small area and shopping is excellent (nearby Ala Moana Shopping Center is large and has almost everything) or would you rather be out in the country in a hotel that sits alone on its own beach and is surrounded by golf courses? In Waikiki, my favorites are the Hyatt Regency and the Hilton Hawaiian Village and for out in the country I like the Turtle Bay Resort & Spa on the North Shore between Haleiwa and Kahuku though there are fancier places on the leeward side of the island. I think a condo would be better for you as you are traveling with young kids. More space, more flexibility with meals, lots of reasons. Also restaurants in Hawaii are quite expensive and often not very good. For me, the true Hawaiian experience is not to be found in Honolulu. It's living in tune with nature, surrounded by trees, being woken by the birds, wearing shorts and flipflops, eating pineapple and papaya. It's simplifying life down to its basics. Not surprisingly, Kauai is my favorite Hawaiian island. Marianne |
