Default hotel deals...have you gotten a good one lately?

Hi,
I'm looking for tips on how to save money by booking a hotel room. What
works best? Online from the travelocitys of the world? Directly from
hotels through their Web sites? By phoning a hotel? From other sites,
such as hotels.com or sidestep.com? Have you had any successes? Any
tips to offer?
thanks,
sean o'
