Irish man rescued after falling for 419 scam

After being swindled, man traveled to Ghana to recover funds

By Dan Goodin
Published Thursday 1st November 2007 17:59 GMT

An Irish man who was kidnapped after falling for an email fraud scam
was rescued when police raided a hotel in the capital of Ghana where
he was being held captive.

James Lafferty, 49, from Ennis, Co Clare, had been held hostage for
about five days while kidnappers demanded money for his safe return.
He was freed after police received a tip.

Lafferty visited the west African country last week in an attempt to
recover money he had paid the email scammers. The kidnappers took him
hostage, then contacted his family and business associates in Ireland
and demanded more money.

"He is currently safe and well in the Honorary Consulate in Accra
after being freed by local police, a spokesman for the Department of
Foreign Affairs told the BBC.

One man has been arrested. It is understood that the kidnappers were
unarmed. ®

419 on to 1? Sounds like an unfair fight and brave of the Ghanaian police to
wade in. Those Nigerians can be nasty.

PADDY AND MICK

=================

Paddy and Mick were sitting in a pub in Kilburn and looking out the
window at the comings and goings at the brothel across the road.

They saw a Church of England vicar walking in the door of the
brothel.

Mick said:

"Bejayzizz Paddy, them Protestant priests are committing terrible sins
of impurity."

They ordered another round, looked out the window, and saw a rabbi
enter the brothel.

Paddy said:

"An sure Mick, even the Jewish clergy are unable to control their
passions."

They ordered another round, looked out the window, and saw a Catholic
priest enter the brothel.

Mick said:

"Begorrah Paddy, one o' them lassies in there must be awfully sick!"
