Default Mosquitoes in Alaska

My daughter and son-in-law and family was there last year for 10 days
in June, and they said they were absolutely horrible. My husband and I
are leaving May 8, driving to Alaska and will be there end of May into
June, was told to be aware and have plenty of deet on hand. Do not know
when the worst time is. Sure someone will answer.

The worst season is mid to late spring when there is lots of groundwater
and the temperature starts to warm up.

FWIW I once did a 5 day canoe trip in northern Ontario in mid May. The
leaves were just starting to come out and the water was still quite cold.
We had no problem with mosquitoes, seeing the odd small one, probably non
biting males. That all changed suddenly on the last day. We woke up to a
horde of mosquitoes hanging around the tend waiting for us to come out.

Don't worry about that. Put insect repellent (deet) on as soon as you
get up and they won't bother you. Make it part of your morning regimen.

Summer.

The problem with your question is that "there" is a huge bit of geography,
and it is just as varied as it is large. If you overlay a map of Alaska on
the US, with Ketchikan down near Florida, and Barrow up in northern Minnisota,
that puts Anchorage over Missouri, Adak Island on the border of Arizona
and Mexico, and Attu over by Los Angeles.

What time of year are snakes bad in the US?

That is not true in most places. The air temperature affects
their activity, as does the amount of wind.

You should have stayed until mid-summer!

Be careful with deet, especially using it on children. Try
putting in only on your hair and clothing, for example, and see
if that is good enough for you personally. People have
different tolerances for mosquitos (I can handle hundreds of
them at any time, as long as they aren't on my face, for
example. Hence I rarely ever use deet directly on my skin.)

I don't remember which it is, but at least one of the B vitamins
makes a difference, so take a vitamin suppliment too. And the
color of your clothes also affects mosquitos; avoid dark greens,
blues, and browns.

If you tend to have allergy problems it's probably best to
assume that you might have a serious reaction to mosquitos. It
might be a good idea to discuss that with a doctor.

Go where? Adak? Nome? Ketchikan? Barrow? Fairbanks?

Each would be *vastly* different in June.
