Default United to Vietnam & FF miles

I tried to use my ff miles to get an upgrade on the new route to Saigon. I
paid for a premium ticket that allows upgrades. However, I had to be put on a
waiting list. Do waiting list passengers ever get their upgrades? I have a
ton of miles, but it is difficult to use them. Even booking a year early
doesn't help. We used to get upgrades from SFO to LHR regularly. Now we have
to go through Chicago and change planes. Are FF miles becoming promises that
can't be made?

Yes, there's still a good chance that you'll be upgraded. If your a Premier
Executive or higher, then your chances are better. United will release
seats in advance for upgrades, but it may be after you buy your ticket. You
can check the status of your upgrade on united.com. If you're not upgraded
by the day of your flight, United will still upgrade at the boarding gate
(sometimes a dozen or more pax).
