Question about Indianapolis IN -- San Jose, CA route

... 223rem said in rec.autos.driving: Does this sound reasonable? Which parts of the route are going to be mountainous/twisty/slow and difficult at night or rain? The reason I'm asking is that I may be driving a large truck, not my car. You're moving to San Jose? You're going to become a Beige Aryan? Welcome to Silicon Valley where the apartment rent hit the sky, but if you work for Google, you have hit the jackpot. Take a look at today (June 4) San Jose Mercury News headline: http://www.mercurynews.com/ featuring: traffic - "better times bring more traffic" http://www.mercurynews.com/traffic/ci_6055904 now you can tell when & where to avoid - usually inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening in all directions of San Jose are BAD. |

Question about Indianapolis IN -- San Jose, CA route

Here's what I'm planning: Indianpolis -- Lincoln NE 11 hours Seems reasonable. Lincoln NE -- Salt Lake City UT 11 hours Ugh, I'd say closer to 15... but I'm guessing, since I haven't driven that route directly. Wyoming is 400 miles across, and Nebraska is 480. Salt Lake -- San Jose CA 11 hours Not possible. Depending on which route you take from Sacramento, you're likely to hit a few hours of traffic along the way. I-80 between Reno and Sacramento is the worst strech of Interstate I've ever driven on. Nevada is 400 miles across, and another two hours from the state line (NV-UT) to Salt Lake City. So in my mind, under regular driving speeds, that takes around 8-9 hours just to get to Reno. Reno to San Francisco is usually about 4 hours, but you're not going there, and probably not through there. With a few stops, I'd figure 15 hours would be more reasonable. Does this sound reasonable? Like I said, I-80 between Reno and Sacramento sucks big time. Wyoming isn't the greatest route to take in a truck (if the weather is bad) but it's really hit and miss. They do close the Interstate from time to time. I've been on a bus where the wind really shook things around, so it does get nasty in the valley where wind blows. The rest I'm not familiar with, I know mostly West Coast areas... S. |

Actually, I-80 is not as bad as I-880 from Berkeley to San Jose. This is the worse in the entire bay area. If you are in the evening outbound commute time, you can take I-680 instead, but with a slight upgrade. |
