Default New drug for Malaria infected people

The Wageningen University (Netherlands) is able to manipulate (by genetic
manipulation) an industrial plant called "Cichorei" in such a way that it
creates the malaria drug "Artemisinine".
"Cichorei" can easely be cultivated at Dutch fields.
At this moment about 1.5 million people yearly die at this desease and among
them lot of Africans.
The basic cots for a (combination) treatment for infected people at present
is now between 4 - 10 dollar.
It is expected that this can be brought back to 0.5 dollar per treatment.
The W. Universty thinks that the devolepment about "Cichorei" will show to
the public that generic manipulation will give great advantages for humans.

The Dutch Institute of the Tropic has high expectations of the new
production methods.

The WHO sees the "Artemisinine" as the Malaria drug for the future as the
parasite at this moment is already insensitive for other cheap medicines.

The Artemesinin drugs have been used for some time now to TREAT malaria,
they are not used as a prophylactic though, I know people in Kenya who
have been treated successfully with a combination of these drugs, the
treatment is not new.
