I'd rank them right up there with SU.

Usually (invariably?) late, the food's not bad if you like Indian food,
incredibly pretty flight attendants.

The India/Europe/US routes are their 'blue ribbon' routes so the aircraft
will be relatively new.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

I'll be flying them TKO-DEL soon, and will weigh in.

Love your sig-file BTW. Is it yours?

Yes.

It's a parody of Roy Batty's death speech in the movie 'Bladerunner'.

So here I am in India...I flew business class TKO to DEL in early Feb.

My impressions: The plane took off on time, landed a bit late because
it had to wait for a landing slot in Delhi. The food was okay - no
better and no worse than any other airline. I'll admit to being a
touch disappointed; but then I suppose Tokyo-made Indian curry is
Tokyo-made Indian curry.

The service was lovely, generally very solicitous and thoughtful. We
actually had stewards as well as stewardesses, but *all* the cabin
crew were very good. It felt like the same kind of service that makes
Indian 5-star hotels so pleasant even when things go wrong.

The only downside, IMO, was the plane itself. It was old, and felt it.
It looked like someone had given the interior a somewhat sloppy coat
of paint in an effort to spiff it up, but it was a long time ago. If
I'd wanted to watch the movie (I didn't) it would have been tough. It
had a central overhead screen, and others were, like me, reading with
their shades up, which made the picture rather pallid.

When I went to their city office to change a booking, I was attended
to immediately by a friendly and helpful staffer.

I'd fly them again very happily.

Good to hear, as I haven't yet flown Air India (or is it Air-India?).
I think I read somewhere that last year - or possibly in 2006 - they
bought their first planes in 15 years or so. I took their affiliated
carrier, Indian Airlines, BLR-SIN and CCU-KTM last year and it was a
similar story: grubby aeroplane but everything else more or less
worked and the staff were pleasant. And I thought the BLR-SIN meal was
one of the best I've ever had in flight.

I have flown AI mostly on US-UK-India routes and always found their
cabin service and food etc to be at least adequate and often quite
good.

However, their ability to deal with "irregular" situations is poor. The
company does not have enough resources and nor the ground staff with
proper training/attitude.

Their prices on the routes I travel are also about average, not the
worst and not the best.

As a result, I neither avoid them nor seek them out.

I am anxiously waiting for Jet or Kingfisher to start flying my routes,
however.
