You shouldn't be any more. Only when entering/leaving Lichtenstein.

You must be a fellow bike rider.

I am yes [www dot alpineroads dot com]. But I liked the same sort of roads
(and curves) when I drive a car. :-)

AFAIR the police/border-guards doesn't check the persons anymore, but the
(Swiss) customs can still check if you bring goods in your car. Lots of
Swiss come to Germany to shop for food, as it's cheaper than in
Switzerland. So the customs do check cars, if you don't bring too much food
and alcohol into Switzerland.

Sometimes (like right now before the NATO-summit in Strasbourg) they even
check between Germany and France.

Then again, they can always check, if they want - I was quite surpirsed to
find a french policeman asking me for my papers last October, while taking
a shortcut through France near Baden-Baden. Each and every car got checked
entering France. 10 kilometres later I didn't even notice entering Germany
again. No sign, no checkpoint, nothing at all.

From Berne to Ascona they did even have multiple checkpoints on the Italien
side, not only police/customs, but also a seperate one from the Guardia de
Finacia. Apparently they were only interested in checking trucks, though (I
thought it was a good idea to stop, but they waved me through).

Regards,

Frank

I think you are looking to go on Nurburgring (Nordschleife). Unfortunately
you won't be alone there...

Quiet is
important, yes!

Then forget about it ;-)

Unless you go in winter and they open it for you, like for this lucky guy:

As they can and do at any Schengen border.

Sometimes (like right now before the NATO-summit in Strasbourg) they even
check between Germany and France.

And between Austria and Germany & Italy. It's normal to temporarily
suspend the Schengen agreement for special occasions. Summits, sporting
events, etc. And you can still be checked at any time.

Sounds like you're describing parts of Luxembourg, near Vianden.

Sounds even more like the north west of Scotland.

I had my passport checked last year going by road from Germany to
Switzerland, but no checks entering or leaving Lichtenstein

What else? (thanks!)

Scottish west coast and islands

There's naught wrong with the North Coast (and the roads heading inland)
either - except that they are single track ;-(

More and more of the North coast has been double-tracked, and there are
more, longer, passing places on many of the single-track bits.

Hi I am touring Europe by car and am seeking scenic drives. I am sure
I will stumble on many beautiful drives, but it wouldn't hurt to seek
all your opinions.

Since you mentioned Germany (and perhaps also the Netherlands): in both
countries, local authorities and the national automobile club have
plotted scenic routes available. Signs along the roads show you where to
go.

For Germany, I would encourage you to explore the Rhine/Moselle region:

master_tlfstrasse-id35.htm

Less spectacular, but in a very quaint environment: the Osning route (to
be expanded with two others, if you like):

You're probably after spectacular mountain roads, cliff coasts and such.
However, if this is your traveling season and you've never been to
Holland, you might consider the tulip fields, North Sea Dunes and old
fishermen-villages 'scenic' as well.

Ah, well. There's so much to see. And you're not even geocaching...
