Some background on the current human rights situation in Vietnam

The Vietnamese Montagnard minority are in urgent need of protection.
Human Rights organizations such as Amnesty International have called on
Viet Nam to take steps to halt the repression of the Montagnard
minority in the Central Highlands, and for Cambodia to honor its
international obligations under the UN Refugee Convention by protecting
those Montagnard people who have sought sanctuary in Cambodia.

In February 2001, thousands of people from indigenous minorities,
collectively known as Montagnards, held protests in the Central
Highlands of Viet Nam. The protests focused on a number of grievances,
including anger at government confiscation of their ancestral forest
homelands, an influx of lowland Vietnamese settlers taking their
agricultural land, lack of freedom of worship for the many who are
members of unauthorized evangelical Protestant churches, and denial of
basic rights including education in native languages. Some protestors
also called for independence for the Central Highlands region.

"Since February 2001, the Vietnamese government has cordoned off the
Central Highlands from the outside world and systematically arrested
and repressed those they believe responsible for the unrest," the
report said. "The Government also appears to be targeting Protestant
churches and their worshipers".

"We believe that many of those arrested in Viet Nam are prisoners of
conscience," Amnesty International said.

"Many hundreds have fled into neighboring Cambodia and despite the
efforts of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR),
the Cambodian authorities have denied basic protection to many asylum
seekers and colluded with the Vietnamese for their return to likely
persecution," according to Amnesty International.

Default WWW.BENNYIMAGES.COM A FUND RAISING DINNER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN VIETNAM, Westminster, CA Dec 5,2003

We have a few generous donors for the fund-raising auction.

My young photographer friend, Vu Tuan Trung donated 3 art photographs:

FLOATING MARKET
AUTUM LAKE
HAND WASH

Trung is a poise, well-mannered, thoughtful, caring and overall a very
nice, gentle guy which should be the dreams of all good girls. Sorry
the dumb, ugly and smelly daughters of EL CHINO, HBUI, DHS, CEO2BE
ect...are not qualified!

You can see his photographs which are laden with his love for the
country and people of Vietnam (not the dumb, filthy, corrrupt,
traitorous jerks in the VCP) in:

You can see the picture of Trung, the photographer, handing over the
gifts at:

There is also a photo of an authentic bow and arrow set by the
Vietnamese montagnards to be auctioned with a bunch of handicrafts
for their benefits on Friday Dec 5th,2003.
