True. But admit, reading the thread is a little amusing, isn't it?

Yep. A bit of lighthearted fun can be a good thing.

No. Like Finns are not Germans.

I don't follow. Anyways, America is a land mass west from Europe and Africa.
People living there are called Americans like folks in Africa are not
called Asians.

Ah, I see, are people who live in Pontianak, Borneo then to be considered
Ecuadorians?

So do you see how a single word can be both a little-used geographic
designation, AND a frequently-used name for a country?

The term "Americans" refers to the country, not the continent.

I do not understand what is so funny to say that I am a

white
man!
As
you may know Bush attacked Iraq and since then white people are

often
thought to be American and are prime target by many Muslim people.

I
am
from Canada.

Just explain to the locals that you are not American.

But he is! Canadians are Americans for sure.

Canadians are not Americans at all! Canada was against going to

war
against Irak. A vast majority of Canadians were and still are against

the
war in Irak. Canada is a social democrat country.

Sorry, but it looks like you just gave yourself away with the use of
the spelling "Irak". You're not Canadian. You're Quebecois. And, like
the French, are not very well loved outside the French speaking world.

Yes I am a French Canadian. I may make a few mistakes in English but
as you may know most Canadian English do not speak French so I am much
better than them..

Actually I wasn't really sure because your English is quite good.

As far as not being liked by English Canadian, it does
not matter in the discussion. In Canada every poll show that a vast
majority of people are against the war of Iraq, not only French Canadian.
It is also a fact that Canada did not want to participate in the war. As a
matter of fact most countries in the world are againts that war.

That's not true. A majority of the countries seem to have taken no
stance, either way. 60 countries supported the war. About the same
number opposed it. And the rest "sat on the fence".

Presumably by choice. Allow me to be blindingly obvious:

Canada = country.
America = country.

Finland = country.
Germany = country.

Europe = continent.
North America = continent.

Does that help?

Anyways, America is a land mass west from Europe and Africa.

The land mass you are thinking of is called North America. It includes
several countries, including the United States of America, which is
commonly called the USA or just America. The country is not the
continent, even though both happen to share the word "America."

People living there are called Americans like folks in
Africa are not called Asians.

I have never heard the term "American" used to refer to citizens of the
North American continent. It is used exclusively, around the world in
my experience, to refer to people living in the USA. Canadians are
especially (and understandably) sensitive about this.

If you refuse to see the distinction between the name of a country and
a name of a continent, that's your problem. Just don't expect others
to conform to your eccentricity.

Besides, Americans can actually spell complicated words such as

"Iraq"

Claude

In French Iraq is spell Irak. I only made a small mistake.

It
does
not change anything to what I have written. Can you write in

French
without
making mistake?

Why would I want to?

Claude

Because languages are molds for the thought. They allow the brain to

see
the world from different angles. In addition you could read news in

French
and see what people thinks in other countries. There is nothing wrong

to
know more.

Richard

Really?

Why French?

Why not a language that is relevant to the world?

Claude

Any languages is good to learn but French can be even more interesting

for
somebody speaking English because many English words come from French.

As
you may know, French has long been the language spoken in England by the
royalty. Only the peasants were speaking English. Many words of French

were
thus incorported in the English language. French was also spoken by the
royalty in many European country and this is why you can see the

influence
of French on many languages such as the Polish and the Russian

languages.

Richard

Queen Elizabeth speaks French around the palace these days?

That _is_ news.

I'm just a peasant, so I believe I'll stick to English, thanks,
although I do have occasional bouts of trying to learn Swahili.

regards

Claude

You are being silly. Read your history and you will see that the English
royalty were speaking French a few centuries ago. This is why so many
French words are now in the English language.

Even when countries support the war it does not mean that the people inside
that country support it. Look at England.
