Software rot depends on change. If nothing change, no "rot" occurs.

The same is true of life

I wasn't talking about embedded systems, either. I was talking about a
microwave oven as a complete product. It requires no technical support, and
you don't have to "update" it to keep it working.

Consumers tolerate things among computer companies that would lead them to
riot with any other type of product. I wonder how long it will take for them
to wise up.

Mine is second-hand and slow, but it works. I've had to replace a
stove(which needed repairs a few times) and refrigerator, though.

That is an embedded system as is a GPS and their software is developed
to a higher standard than PC apps. On the other hand it is only designed
to run on one specific piece of hardware. That is their strength. It is
also the strong point for most MACs. Apple controlled both the hardware
and the software.

For Windows it can get installed on a vast array of different
motherboards with different MCU, disk and memory configurations as well
as a huge array of additional cards... though these days there are fewer
people plugging cards into PCs compared to the past.

It requires no technical support, and
you don't have to "update" it to keep it working.

This is not completely true. Several systems I have (washing machine,
dish washer and ovens) can be updated. As can most cars.

Consumers tolerate things among computer companies that would lead them to
riot with any other type of product.

That I agree with. Most embedded systems have far better software than
PC applications

I wonder how long it will take for them
to wise up.

They don't

So why is PC software written to a lower standard?

motherboards with different MCU, disk and memory configurations as well

people plugging cards into PCs compared to the past.

And when they do plug cards in, they are a lot more likely to work
immediately.

This is not completely true. Several systems I have (washing machine,
dish washer and ovens) can be updated. As can most cars.

What sorts of updates do you load into your washing machine and oven?

Commercial necessity and lack of discipline

For Windows it can get installed on a vast array of different
motherboards with different MCU, disk and memory configurations as well
as a huge array of additional cards... though these days there are fewer
people plugging cards into PCs compared to the past.

Usually they work because there are SW drivers supplied with them as
Window is an open architecture with defined interfaces.

This is not completely true. Several systems I have (washing machine,
dish washer and ovens) can be updated. As can most cars.

I don't the service people do. Not often but they can had have done.
