Default Finland in January?

Hi there,

I'm in England and am planning to go to Finland for a few days in =
January. Has anyone here any experience of Finland in the winter that =
they would like to share?

I've been told that it will be very cold, and not too much light, but =
should be ok, but am slightly worried that we shall be stuck in a hotel =
for a lot of the time.=20

Hi Sarah,

I suppose that it will be very cold in January- and much snow! The more
north you go, the higher the possibility to be stuck- I think...

This is true :-) At the moment there's no snow here, and the temperature
has been from 5 to -10. Usually there is at least some snow in January.

It's also dark this time of the year, but luckily there's the "light
weeks" going on here in Tampere, so the city has lots of nice lights
hanging over the streets in the centre. :-)

Yeah, most probably you'll at least need a decent pair of gloves and
something to wear on your head. And bring big shoes so you can stuff warm
stuff into them...

welcome to Finland!

We're going to Tampere. The flights were cheap and we've found a =
reasonably priced apartment to rent so we can do our own food so it'll =
cut down costs a bit.

Do you have any recommendations of things to do there? We've already =
pencilled in the Moomin museum, and the market.

As someone in Tampere, do you have any "mustsees" there?=20

My husband has already pencilled in the Moomin museum and I want to go =
to the market and a couple of art galleries, but we have a few more days =
to fill but not sure what with yet.

It's going on until 6th January, so if you're quick, you'll see it. The
official English term seems to be "Tampere Illumination".

It's hard to tell. It really depends on how much time you have and what
stuff you're interested in. My list would probably include the Pyynikki
observation tower, which is a nice and cosy spot to have a cup of coffee
and enjoy the view over the city.

And then there are many small museums and other things. You could take a
look (unless you already have) at the Tampere city travel pages at:
