MS Volendam Crew Member Drowns
A 32-year-old man was missing presumed drowned Saturday after falling from a cruise liner
in New Zealand, stuff.co.nz reported. The crew member of the US-based Holland America line's MS Volendam was thrown into Lyttelton Harbour - about 13km southeast of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island - when a training exercise went wrong. He was reported by New Zealand media to be a foreign national. The incident occurred when a cable holding a lifeboat to the cruise ship snapped, throwing two men into the water about 2:30pm local time, according to Newstalk ZB. TVNZ reported the boat was docked in the harbor at the time. One man was able to cling to a bucket before being rescued by the Canterbury Coastguard and taken to the hospital. He reportedly had no major injuries. The rescued man saw the other man go under the water and disappear but was not able to save him, Radio New Zealand reported. Both men were wearing heavy clothing and boots at the time, and neither was wearing a lifejacket. A search for the missing man using helicopters and divers is continuing. http://www.news.com.au/world/man-pre...-1225984256682 |
