Allocate at least three or four days for Berlin. There's plenty to see
there, especially if you're interested in Cold War history, etc.

Cheers,

Make credence recognised that on Fri, 30 Mar 2007 14:05:15 GMT, Alan S
has scripted:

For those that I went to, the number in () is the days I
spent on my first trip, [] is the second one. And I had a
wonderful time.

How are you moving between them?

Florence (2)

It depends on your interests, I suppose. What do you intend to do during your stay?

Well I'd like to do interesting sight seeing, visite the most famous
museums like Natural (LOndon) and Louvre (Paris), parks, etc

How are you planning on moving around? You seem to be jumping
around alot so I am presuming you plan on flying. I'm also not sure
what your interest in Liverpool is. I suspect you'll want roughly 3
days
in Berlin based upon your other city stays.

No I'm plannig do it by train. And I'd like to go to Liverpool just
because I'm a Beatles fan

The Tower and the buildings around it (the "Field of Miracles") are
impressive, and there is more to Pisa than just those few places.

However, the Tower receives an absolutely huge number of tourists, and
it is surrounded by endless souvenir stalls, so most tourists who just
see the Tower, the tourist mobs, and the flea market atmosphere of the
souvenir stalls around the Tower will be disappointed.

I spent most of my time in the Cathedral. It was my first
experience of that type of architecture and decoration. The
tower was, of course, interesting but not as much.

I happened to be out of sorts:-) There was "massive"
construction going on around the Brandenberg gate at the
time (mid '06), traffic chaos and a miserable rainy day. I
had spent a few fascinating days in small towns (Burg,
Brandenburg and district) and disliked the big-city chaos.
So we had a quick look and moved on to Magdeburg, Apolda and
Weimar.

No, I intend do it all by train. Do you think it's not a good idea?

I think trains are a great way to see Europe. You get to see the
scenery instead of just flying between city centers and not seeing
anything in between, and it's a lot more pleasant than being on a
plane and being in airports. It's certainly possible to do your
itinerary all by train, but you will either need to take some
additional stops, since Berlin and Portugal are far out of the way of
the other places you're visiting, or prepare for some very long train
trips. Florence to Berlin for example is a 16 hour trip involving
changing trains twice. Lisbon or Porto to Barcelona would be similar.

Can you get an "open-jaw" plane ticket where you fly into one city and
out of another? Flying in to Lisbon and out of London, for example,
would save you a lot of time.

People do NOT fly between city centers. Airports reside well outside city
centers unlike train terminals. Some older airports stand pretty close to
downtown like Tempelhof in Berlin (which is the main reason for it's
abolition). It is common that modern airports are built at least 20
kilometers out from big cities. For instance Gardermoen sits about 40
kilometers away from downtown Oslo. Therefore tranfser times tend to be
substantially longer from city centres to airports than to railway stations.
Moreover, it is typically possible and quite easy to buy a train ticket
beforehand on carrier's internet pages (or by a phone call). Therefore there
is little time friction at train terminals compared to airports: when a
traveller arrives in a train station, he can just walk in a car and occupy
his seat. To an airport he must arrive in much earlier in order to pass all
those "check" and "check in" points. Naturally for legs lengthier than 1000
kilometers flying is a true time saver.
