Can we ship our bags ahead?
Well I checked fedex and it was about the same, but the usps economy parcel
post to italy for 30lbs is $44. I guess you can pay extra for signed receipt. Then arrange with the hotel to keep it until you arrive? Sounds like it would work but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with it. LOL "LeeNY" wrote in message oups.com... How much do you think FedEx and UPS is gonna cost? Probably at least as much, if not more. You can go to their websites and price it out - all they need is destination country, weight, dimensions.. Hi Rosalie, The problem with the above solution is that the luggage would have to arrive the very day that the ship is in port during certain hours. A day early or a day late, would not work. Even if it arrived the day of the sailing, I would be very hesitant to count on it being delivered to the ship and have it loaded. Call me skeptical, g but way too many things can go wrong. The problem with USPS is that it is not a delivery time guaranteed
service. Unless you sent it months ahead, your parcel may not be there when you need it. madx wrote: Well I checked fedex and it was about the same, but the usps economy parcel post to italy for 30lbs is $44. Can we ship our bags ahead?
If shipping to a hotel, may I suggest the following?
1) Understand the customs rules. Some countries are nearly impossible because of these rules. 2) Have it shipped in care of Mr/Ms X. Contact the hotel's concierge and find out who is working the day of the bags' arrival. Talk to that person and have the bag shipped to them. 3) In general, the "fancier" the hotel, the better your chances of success. 4) If you are staying on a club floor, use that facility rather than the general concierge. Keep in mind that shippers is a group that includes all the major airlines. Hi Everyone, I do not recommend that you do the above. At most ports they do not have anyone to accept these types of containers unless special arrangements have been made ahead of time. There are specialized companies that will pick up your luggage at your door and deliver them to the ship. Please keep in mind that this is not an inexpensive option. I saw a company touting the fact that they had very few glitches. Of course, for the $350 per bag charge, I would hope not. vbg Best regards, Ray LIGHTHOUSE TRAVEL 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905http://www.lighthousetravel.com -- www.cruiseshippers.com e.g. New York to England 0-30lbs $236 per bag 31-50lbs $311 per bag 51-70lbs $396 per bag 25-50lbs $311 per golf bag. At that sort of prices I'd seriously consider hiring a student :-) |

If I were going to do that (ship later than I left) I would probably ship it to a hotel where I was going to be on the last night instead of the ship. If I were doing it inside the US, I would send it to someplace like a local MBE or mail drop or even General Delivery at the PO In one case when I wanted the customs office in Pittsburgh to ship us a sticker for our boat and they wouldn't ship it General Delivery, I had them ship it to the Customs Office in Key West (where we were), after I checked with them to be sure it would be OK to do that. .. |

Hi, I believe FedX and UPS will hold at their office for a pickup but for a limited number of days. They will not hold for for a very long period. Some hotels would offer this service if arrangements are made in advance. Of course, the security of your items might be something to consider. Best regards, Ray LIGHTHOUSE TRAVEL 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 http://www.lighthousetravel.com Don't forget also that there is always the chance that your baggage gets held at Customs in whichever country for one reason or another, you might arrive ready to board to find out you shipment is sitting in some warehouse in another part of the country at the official Port of Entry waiting for you to pay import duty or get some forms stamped or some such. One of the reasons for using those expensive services is that they are ferrying your stuff through the often mazelike regulations and laws od other countries. Most likely they have their own arrangements to receive the goods and handle any paperwork generated at the far end. Don't assume that just because it's nothing but clothing and personal goods that you won't wind up paying duty or fees or posting bond or have to fill out endless forms at the far end and you certainly can't expect some local hotel to go out of pocket if the boxes arrive with fees due unless you make some sorrt of arangement in advance or are staying with a high-end hotel and paying serious high-end rates. Packages shipped with vague delivery instructions like "Hold until called for" or just to a hotel or such often send up a red flag to inspectors and using established freight forwarders is invariably very expensive for one time shippers. Sending a package to the other side of the world is a lot more complex than shipping stuff to your Mom back in Iowa. making sure it gets there in a tinely fashion is often even more frustrating..ever ship to Canada? They seem unable to process anything quickly, you can get mail from L.A. to London faster than from Bufallo NY to Toronto sometimes. Jim P. (24 years in Customs enforcement) |
