Default Trams shut down in Amsterdam on Nov 15th

I was in Amsterdam this past weekend. I had wanted to visit the Museums in
the Museumplein. I was at Plantage Kerklain. After waiting for about 20
minutes a car pull up and said the Trams would be shut down all day for
Sidney Glass (my hearing). I decided to walk the 2 Kilometres to the
Museums but unfortartely a lot of the canal bridges were up and people could
not pass through.
I than read the next day in the Nederland Metro paper that it was a
celebration of Sinter Klass (not Sidney Glass). Is it common for the Trams
to be shut down? Shouldn't they provide advance notice?
BTW, I love the new tram cars.

You can write to Sidney Glass directly. They are auto glass specialists in
Nebraska:

It's Sinterklaas (the same guy that Santa Claus was derived from, but
that's an Anglo-Saxon fraud-imitator). Sinterklaas, celebrated in
Belgium and the Netherlands (and parts of Germany and France), is the
authentic one.

He's not celebrated on 15 Nov, but on 5 Dec. However, on 15 November
he's been arriving in Amsterdam by boat (from Spain, as the legend
goes), followed by a large parade. Tens of thousands of children and
their parents are waiting in the streets to view that. Also in other
cities in the Netherlands and Belgium Sintklaas is arriving by boat or
train, followed by a ride on his white horse escorted by many
colourful Black Peters ("Zwarte Pieten").

Naturally all trams on the route are temporarily suspended then, it
happens every year on a Sunday afternoon in mid-November. This is of
course common knowledge, but there have been posters from the public
transport company all over the city and in all the trams, at least 2
weeks in advance.

Happy Sinterklaas on 5 December, and be good so that you get lots of
presents. Otherwise Black Peter will put you in his bag and take you
to Spain.

Cheers,

Erik

Gent/Amsterdam
