Default Carry-ons (Opinions?)

Here's a question for discussion;
What's your opinion on carry-ons.
I travel for business, and check my tools & suitcase. I carry on my
Computer Case. I can't believe the amount of things that people try to
stuff into the overheads. If I put my case under the seat, I have to sit
with my legs in my chest. It goes up. I'll move it in an unusual
circumstance, but not for the half dozen people toting 2 or 3 fairly large
bags. And no matter what people think, the Airlines DON'T enforce the 1 bag
rule.

Right On!!

My pet hate are the good souls in economy, laden down with half their
household possessions, who board early and fill up the first class
overheads with unbelievable junk!! No room for my single normal sized
carryon when I board!! FA's do nothing to stop that either!

But you can. Ask if the bag belongs to any of the others around you, of
course it won't. Take the bag down, bring it to the FA and say I'm sorry,
my bag doesn't fit, can you gate check it for me? Replace it with your bag
and all is happy. You will be well off the plane before the guy in 89G gets
back up and starts looking for his bag.

I've done it more then once.

Believe it or not, I actually have been on two flights on AW where the
FAs have enforced the 1 bag and personal item rule. If I can check it,
I always do, and in the situation that it is not possible, then it
*almost* always goes under the seat - but I typically don't need the
extra leg room.

Sometimes the security people enforce the rule, however. In November
I was flying out of EWR but hadn't packed quite well enough to fit
everything in my one carry-on and my laptop case. So I carried my
little carry-on suitcase, my laptop, and a shopping bag that was only
half full. The security checkpoint person turned me away, saying I
could have only one bag and one personal item. So I got out of line,
put the laptop in the shopping bag, and went back through and he let
me pass, because technically, now, I was in compliance.

I thought the purpose of this FAA rule was to reduce the burden on the
security screeners by reducing the amount of carry-on luggage they
would need to screen?

Absolutely!!
Many airlines have a simple box near the check in desk, built to the maximum
hand-luggage dimensions. If your bag is too big to fit in the box, it doesn't
get in as hand-luggage!! At least that's the theory, pity nobody enforces it.

I don't carry ANY thing 'cept maybe something to read.

I don't understand why people burden themselves on the long walks to
and from the gangways and then trouble their fellow passengers by
blocking an aisle. I just don't get it. When they're a bit early have
have to go to the toilet, they ask strangers to "watch my bag" not
knowing whether that stranger is going to disappear with it. I just
don't get it.

On departure, the first thing I do is get rid of my bag. On arrival,
the last thing I do is get my bag. Hell, I don't need it at an airport
nor even 'tween the airport and the hotel. All I really need with me
is a passport, a credit card, a bit of cash and, if I'm renting a car,
a license to drive (I don't burden myself with that if I'm not going
to drive).

When travelling standby and maybe having long waits thus possibly
needing my toothbrush and comb, I'll take those things out of the
suitcase but not anything else.

Some people seem to think their time's SO valuable that they have to
burden themselves, inconvenience strangers, and risk a back injury yet
I have often departed in a car or taxi before they. I just don't get
it.

When travelling First Class, I'm usually among the last to board and
first to debark while others are struggling with their stuff. I just
don't get it.

[Ah, I feel better now. Thanks for the therapeutic question.]

Because quite often I've had to wait in excess of 40 minutes after the plane
has landed, before my bag actually shows up. If I could get away with just
hang baggage when I go on a flight. I would do that!

It's the "me" generation causing all the problems. Travelers don't want YOU
to carry on anything that might get in THEIR way because they feel that all
the overhead space on board is theirs bought and paid for - included in
their 79 dollar ticket!

My biggest pet peeve is those damn strollers! These yuppies that show up at
the gate with their kid strapped to their back in a sling and a double-wide
cadillac stroller filled to the brim with bags and bull****!

ALL STROLLERS should be banned except for the umbrella type that fold up
very small. All other should be taken away at the ticket counter. Have you
ever seen a gate agent try to check a 50 pound stroller at the gate and get
it down them damn stairs to the belly of the plane? And all the while the
breeder parents are bitching about "don't scratch it" or they look at them
like it's their job to put up with their junk.

Airlines don't enforce the carry-on rules because they won't do it
uniformly. If one airline does it, they fear loosing customers to another
airline that does not. It's going to take the FAA/TSA to put the screws to
carry-on abuse so the airlines will be off the hook in the eyes of ****ed
off passengers.

Anyone who travels to south america or the caribbean has seen the sheer
LOADS those people carry on board. Not just last week I saw a bag get
inspected at the gate because it was too large for starters, but also
because the bag was stained indicating something inside was leaking. When
they opened it up....low and behold the contents was the front half of a
TRANSMISSION for an old Buick, wrapped in paper towels!!!! Best guess was
the other half already made it on board in a traveling companion's bag. How
would you like THAT to come flying at your head in heavy turbulence when the
overhead bin shakes open?

Once, I even saw a woman raising holy hell in San Diego because security
screeners had denied her bag containing her dead dog who died during
vacation. She thought she should be able to shove the carcass in a carry on
bag and haul it on board to drag it home to bury it . . .stink and all!

There is no end in sight!

And you still had to take your computer out again at the Xray... don't you
just love common sense!
