Ermalee.... It is so much easier nowadays to transfer precious VHS or
camcorder tapes to DVD. The cost of "stand-alone" DVD recorders (much
like VCRs) are dropping all the time. I bought one about 9 months ago
and have transferred all my aging (some 20 years old) family videos to
DVDs. I also took my 8mm camcorder footage of my three cruises and
put them onto DVD. You know what? No one else may want to watch my
boring cruise videos, but *I* find that I watch them quite often now
that I don't have to worry about VHS tape problems. I think I
transferred my 20 year old family footage *just* in time, actually.
Some of those tapes were not looking very good and probably didn't
have much more viewings in them.

Even if you wait one year, I imagine prices will drop on those nifty
recorders by at least $100. Oh, I use mine daily just to record the
afternoon program I miss when I'm at work..... JJ

It relived all the trips for me

Wow, I'm impressed. I have lots of stuff that I'd like to have transferred to
DVD's don't know where to find a place with this capability.

Thanks, JJ. I wouldn't mind investing in one of those DVD recorders
if I thought for a minute that I wouldn't go more bonkers than I
already am while trying to figure it out. I am often floored by
the little complexity of my cell phone and digital camera. My
kids say "read the manual, mom", but I just can't get around to
that! I would buy the DVD recorder if you lived next door and
would come over and get me started on the right track.
We once had lots of 8mm movies of family and have had those
on VHS tapes for many years. They would be the first ones I'd
like to have on DVD's. I'm hoping to find a service center that
will do them at a reasonable cost.
I admire you for being able to do it yourself.

Well, if I did live nearby, I would gladly help you! Hey, you have
something nearly as good though.... you've got "kids"... you know,
they're good for all sorts of help nowadays. They're more tech-savy
than most people my age. I was unfortunately born too early. When I
was in college, the computer filled a room and data was stored on
those punch-cards. I have a feeling we may be in the same "boat".
Good luck on finding a service that is reasonable for transferring
your movies.......... JJ
