I have heard horror stories about how slow the Passport

it with the old passport, pictures and check. Even after
receiving the form back since I had forgotten to sign it, the
whole process took three weeks.

I had no problem renewing in France. It is done by mail working
through the Embassy and I don't think it took two weeks.
I thought it a bit pricey.

The problem is that it works via the internet which makes
it difficult for the non-adept, equivalent to getting
an electronic ticket.

At 76, the new passport will probably be my
last one.

I have another 5 years on my French passport but have
to renew my national identity card this year. In
France that is now free.

Mine expires in 2015, I will be 108 years old then,
dead or alive!

It was on the news in just the last day or so that State has
implemented some new processing procedure and is pretty nearly
caught up.

True. That's why I was able to get mine in 2 hours paying an express
fee. Their game now timewise seems to be how much they can get out of
you versus the time they make you wait.

They've been fully caught up since around March. I know several people,
including myself, who've had roughly two-week turnaround on renewals since then.
