We are planning our trip to the Red Centre for the year after next. We love
Australia and have travelled extensively in your wonderful country but have
never tackled the "middle bit".

So, when is the best time of the year to see Ularu and also Darwin? We know
that we need to avoid the Wet.

We are thinking about taking the train as part of our trip and know that the
Ghan will go right up to Darwin from Feb next year so that could be an
option.

We will probably have about a month to 6 weeks to spend on our trip. We are
very active not quite middle aged couple and are used to staying in budget
accomodation.

Does anyone have any tips, must sees etc that would be helpful to us?

Whilst it is sure to be an enjoyable experience, I would not put the new
Ghan to Darwin in the budget category. See http://www.gsr.com.au

July-August is the best time to visit the Red Centre and points north
thereof.

Unless if you plan to do any of the centre as a camping tour, be aware
that the middle of winter nights get below freezing, while days are
very plesant. If you stay in hotel/motel accommodation you won't find
this as much of a problem.

We went in May and found nights cold, but not uncomfortable on the
camping portion of our trip.
