Query Advice on Trip to New Zealand

My wife is insisting that we take a trip to NZ in November - December this year.
I know little about NZ and would welcome any suggestions about whether this is a
good time of the year to visit, interesting places to see, how to get a
reasonably price plane ticket from northeastern USA, etc. Please reply to:

This is late spring, early summer & is a pretty good time to visit. The
countryside is green & lush-looking (as opposed to mid summer when it can be
quite dry looking). Day length is good and there are fewer tourists around
than in mid summer but it can be quite wet esp in the North Island.

Places to visit depend on how long you have & what you like to see - natural
scenery or cities; adventure activities or wildlife?
