Default Kea Lani versus Four Seasons--Maui Honeymoon

I hope someone can help us. I'm booking my honeymoon in Maui (we live
in New Jersey) for March 7, 2004, for two weeks. I have read a lot of
great things about the Kea Lani and the Four Seasons hotels, and some
others also. We have decided that we want to splurge, so the
difference in price between hotels is not a factor. We just want the
best hotel, period. We are concerend that that the Four Seasons might
have too many kids running around, and we like that the Kea Lani has
an adult pool. The Kea Lani also has much bigger rooms. The Four
Seasons has better name recognition and we know a lot of people who
have stayed there who loved it. I would very much appreciate it if
some people could give us some insight into which hotel in Maui is the
best. Please post responses to newsgroup.
Thanks a lot,
Charles

They're both very nice and I'm sure you'll enjoy either one of them immensely
and have a very nice trip. You couldn't have picked a better time as the
middle of march to the middle of April are the most slack seasons as are the
first 2 weeks in October, so I doubt if you'll have a lot of children to
contend with. My favorite holel on Maui is the Grand Wailea and some say it's
the best on Maui, and my second choice would be Four Seasons, but, others
disagree. I don't see how you could go wrong in any of the 3 and I'm sure
you'll get excellent views because of the time of year you've chosen. For
more information about Maui - you are invited to visit my Maui webpage at:
http://keith.martin.home.att.net/vMaui.html - where you'll find no
advertising, no cookies, no pop-ups and nothing for sale. At the moment AT&Ts
personal webpage servers are down, but, supposedly will be back up and
running in a few hours. Bon voyage. KM

Default Wailea Hyatt???

Aloha Thomas,

I thought the only Hyatt on Maui was in Ka`anapali. The hotel next door to
the Four Seasons is the Grand Wailea. Have they changed it's name?

Charles. You have a couple misconceptions I think I can clear up. As
far as Kids, the Kea Lani (at least lately) is catering to much more
families with kids than the Four Seasons, which tends to cater to the
older FIT crowd with no children.

As for the best hotel, the majority opinion here on Maui is that it's
neither the Kea Lani, which is owned and operated now by the Fairmont
chain, or the Four Seasons is the "best". That would generally be
understood by most to be the Wailea Hyatt Regeancy Resort and Spa,
curiously right next door to the Four Seasons. It's not even close,
the Hyatt IS a tad more pricey than either of the resorts you mention,
but as you said, if cost is no option, the Hyatt is considered
superior. The Hyatt does have more traffic because it's larger, and
it runs a nightclub in the lobby where a lot of young locals attend,
but as far as the facilities, the pools, the grounds, and of course
the world-renowned Spa facility, I'd say they are a notch above either
the Four Seasons or the Kea Lani.

You have picked one of the best times of year, because on that side of
the island tends to be very hot during the summer, but in March it's
not real hot yet, and the brunt of our rainy season will be over.

Being born and raised here I'm definitely biased, because Maui is the
best, and I congratulate you on your good sense on skipping Oahu and
the big city of Honolulu.

Hope this helps. Congratulations, and I know you'll love it.

You should have told them that in Hawaii, 90 degrees is considered hot and
for folks from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix - that ain't so bad! I

was
over on Maui for four days earlier this month and stayed near Honokawai

and
enjoyed myself immensely! But, the Big Island is still my favorite! KM

Ah, but when it's 90 deg. in Phoenix they're not having 80-90%
relative humidity. That's what makes it extra hot, and usually the
first thing tourists mention (in my experience).

Yeah, I remember you saying you were going to be here. Glad you liked
it. Were you stunned at the increased traffic? I live in Wailuku and
usually roam around the Central area. Yes, the Big Island is nice, I
especially love the Kamuela area, Kauai is always awesome, and you
can't beat Honolulu for the shopping, but.......lol............There's
a reason for that old saying: Maui No Ka Oi. g It really is.
I have family on every island excepting Kahoolawe and Niihau, and they
say it too.

Yes, the increase in the traffic on Maui was kind of shocking. I thought I
was back on Oahu during the bus strike! Well, there's nothing that will cure
those died in the wool "Maui No Ka Oi" [Maui is the Greatest] types, so I
guess you'll be like that forever and I'm sure there's nothing I can say to
change your mind! KM

Sorry Kawika, I kinda mangled up my typing, you and A/C are quite
correct, it's normally referred to as the Grand Wailea Hotel Resort
and Spa, and it IS a Hyatt Regeancy. I snuck Hyatt into the name so
that the thread author would know that it wasn't the same two hotels
he was mentioning, because as you know, the Hyatt Grand Wailea is
right next door to the Four Seasons, and close to the Kea Lani.
Anyway, the Grand Wailea is a Hyatt Regeancy. If I remember right,
the Hyatt in Kaanapali has changed hands many times, and Hyatt merely
has a contract to operate the property, which is the same situation in
Wailea.

The thread author is MIA, so I hope I didn't confuse him. g

As I recall, when the Grand Wailea was first built it was called the Hyatt
Wailea or Grand Hyatt Wailea or something of that nature. KM

Default Kea Lani versus Four Seasons--Maui Honeymoon

For what it's worth, Travel and Leisure magazine in 2002 rated Maui the
number one tropcal island in the world. Maui hotels appearing on the
list of top 25 Pacific Rim Resorts we

2. Four Seasons Wailea
3. Fairmont Kea Lani
17. Hyatt Regency
18. Renaissance Wailea Beach
19. Ritz-Carlton Kapalua
20. Grand Wailea
21. Kapalua Bay Hotel
24. Maui Prince at Makena

These ratings come from targeted reader surveys. The number one Pacific
Rim Resort was the Big Island's Four Seasons Hualalai.

Default Wailea Hyatt???

The Four Seasons at Wailea is now a Fairmont? They're website doesn't
mention this.

I happened by the area over the weekend and the road-side sign says
"Hyatt Grand Wailea Hotel Resort & Spa". I agree, it might be a touch
better than the thread author's Kea Lani and Four Seasons. Four
Seasons kinda slipped quite a bit when it became a Fairmont.

Speaking of the thread's author??? He must be busy working out
getting ready for the honeymoon. LOL.

The resort originally was the Grand Hyatt Wailea Resort and Spa.
There is already a Hyatt Regency in Kaanapali, so they couldn't
call it a Hyatt Regency.

It dropped the Hyatt affiliation about 10 years ago, and is now named
the Grand Wailea and is run by KSL resorts. (For Californians, think
La Quinta and the Clarmont). Though I absolutely love the Grand, and
spend at least a week there every year, if I were on my honeymoon I'd
pick the Four Seasons. The service at the Grand Wailea isn't quite up
to par with the Four Seasons, though if you book the Napua tower it
can be close. The pools are spectacular, and my kids won't let us go
anywhere else. But if you are looking for less kids, (or even less
conventions) the Grand Wailea is probably not the place.

You have picked one of the best times of year, because on that side of
