Default EasyJet First-Timer

We're flying EasyJet for the first time next month. Out of Gatwick to
Rome and then a couple of weeks later out of Napoli to Stansted. From
what I've gathered, from friends & the internet:

1. Get to the airport early.
2. Don't bring a lot of baggage.
3. Delays are normal.
4. Relax, we're on vacation.

Questions:

Is there decent food at Gatwick or should we pick something up in London
to bring with us before we take the train out? With the tube ride, the
Express and the waiting, we're going to get hungry before landing at Rome.

Is baggage retrieval prompt?

Is there anything else I should know?

Just my experience

1. Get to the airport early.

Yes

2. Don't bring a lot of baggage.

No - EasyJet don't have a particularly restrictive baggage policy and
I've taken a *lot* of baggage on EasyJet without being charged excess

3. Delays are normal.

Not particularly; however EasyJet operate on tight turnrounds at the
airports away from London, so if they are delayed on the flight out of
London they won't be able to recoup time before they fly back from
Italy

4. Relax, we're on vacation.

The last time I was in the south terminal the food was particularly
ghastly at Gatwick. On the whole Stansted's been better but maybe
I've just been more successful at finding decent food there

Is baggage retrieval prompt?

Usually very slow when I've been at Gatwick (for all airlines, not
just EasyJet). Faster at Stansted

That's the same with all airlines.

Only if you want to be in the first boarding group and get first choice of
seats, otherwise no real need to (but don't be late)

2. Don't bring a lot of baggage.

Easyjet allow unlimited weight of hand luggage, as long as you dont exceed
the size restrictions

3. Delays are normal.

No more than other airlines

4. Relax, we're on vacation.

Relax, you're on holiday

That depends on how you define decent - there is a lot of choice.

I try to arrive 1.5 to 2 h before the flight time. I hate the thought of
being turned away at the check in because I missed the deadline by two
minutes (and I have come very close a couple of times when unforeseen
traffic delays held me up).

2. Don't bring a lot of baggage.

I've seen people take a huge amount of luggage and appear not to be
penalised. Awkward stuff and some sports equipment (eg, tennis racquets)
if not packed has to be checked in separately at another desk.

If you want to take lots of baggage, and everyone else does, too, then
be prepared to wait while the handlers hump it all out of the hold at
the other end.

Hand luggage is 'unlimited' - but up to a point. There used to be a 5kg
limit, but no longer - at least at Luton. Now all your hand luggage
needs to be able to fit in a space less than 50x40x20 cm. All this is
probably on the Easy jet website.

If you can pack really lightly and don't need to take sharp objects (eg,
Swiss Army knife, corkscrew, nail scissors, nail file), you could
potentially not check any luggage in, which will cut out your baggage
retrieval time.

3. Delays are normal.

Yes, in my recent experience. Also, Easyjet sometimes operates a coach
service from the gate to the plane or vice versa, which adds delay.

Is there decent food at Gatwick or should we pick something up in

There are lots of restaurants in Gatwick so unless you have especially
restrictive dietary requirements, want to spend less than 1GBP or can
only subsist on Michelin starred fare, you'll find something to eat no
problem.

The plane will have some refreshments on board, and maybe even
sandwiches, but they aren't free of charge.

Is baggage retrieval prompt?

Usually yes, but this depends on how much all the passengers take.
Something to think about?

Is there anything else I should know?

Try to remember it's a no frills service for which you presumably paid a
low fare and you won't go far wrong.

Last night on my return flight from Barcelona, a fellow passenger asked
the cabin crew if there was somewhere in the plane he could hang up his
formal jacket, which he was carrying on a hanger. The attendant told him
that if he didn't want to put it in the overhead locker, he could hang
it from the folding tray at an empty seat. He tried this on the seat
next to me, but the hanger was too large for the hook. The attendant
said he'd have to take it off the hanger, at which point the passenger
said 'forget about it', and returned to his seat.

It's improved quite a bit. There's an Est Est Est, Pizza Express and
Caviar House there now, in addition to the other usual suspects. It's
not too bad a choice really, and frankly luxurious compared to a lot of
airports.
