It varies from North to South. I'd avoid the coral spawning as the water has
a scum like appearance and some people have allergies to the spawn if they
swim in it. Whilst it is unique, it also reduces visibility.

Mid winter (July) in Cairns is like mid summer in Southern Europe.

Further South, maybe September/October, but no later as the monsson starts
by then.

1. Agreed. The spawning may be miracle of nature, but unless you enjoy
swimming in coral semen and having 1 or 2 metres visibility, its not a good
time for Scuba diving.

2. There are no blue ringed octopuses (AFAIK) on the GBR; they are found
mostly around Sydney and there all year. You are thinking of box jellyfish;
they are active during the Wet season (Nov/March), aren't really much of a
problem on the GBR itself, but will happily kill you if you swim near the
shore (eg at a beach).

3. Anytime outside of the wet season is a good time to visit. During the
wet, it rains a lot (duh) which screws up visibility, and its very hot,
humid and generally unpleasant. At the very south of the reef (say Lady
Elliot or Lady Musgrave islands) it can get a little cool at night in mid
Winter, so personally I avoid July/August, but then I like it to be hot if I
am jumping in and out of the water. Further north it doesn't matter at all;
its always at least warm and usually hot.
