You are quite right. Familiarity breeds contempt I guess.

How can one have familiarity to breed contempt if one has never
even been there?

I have seen
such cases at serveral places but its surprising every time.

Funny thing you say about rocks though.
We were in Arches national park a few years ago and happened to meet a
senior couple. They spoke to us about where we were from and were
surprised that we flew so far to see Utah. It was our turn to inquire
about them. The lady goes like oh! "we just live about 20 miles from
here and have lived here for 30 years. Our neighbours told us that
there were these big rocks around here and we came to see them"
Really I was at a loss for words as we went our separate ways.

Hi

A bit like the time we were standing by the car in a parking area
halfway up a mountain somewhere in Arizona and a couple asked what the
town "down there" was. My wife then started telling them what several
of the visible places were and what the roads numbers were.

The couple lived a few miles away - we were on vacation from England
(my wife did most of the map-reading).

Hi

I was born and bred in the Lake District National Park here in
England. I once went to a lecture given by the head of the National
Park who stated he would never employ a local as a park ranger for
that very reason.

In his experience, an enthusiastic "offcomer" was usually far more
knowledgeable about the area.

By hearing and reading about it. You also get real familiar if every out
of towner visits and describes his visit to the place. I have heard
statements like "its been there forever, one of these days I will get
around to see it" several times.

That's not contempt.
