Default Travel from Egypt to Libya??

Hey, everyone.

I'm thinking about a trip from Egypt to Libya next spring ('05). I'm
an American, so I know the visa part is a bit of a problem but,
assuming I can get one, what's the best way to travel? Is it difficult
to get across the border? Is it easy enough to travel backpacker-style
or is it best to sign up with a tour agency (any recommendations?)
Lots of questions but seems like a pretty exciting trip.

Thanks,

Barr

You can cross from Egypt into Libya only at the Salloum border post.

See the Libya FAQ for details about the visa:

As for traveling through Libya "backpacker-style", all tourists are required
to travel with a state-appointed guide and you must submit your planned
itinerary with your visa application. Once inside, though, it's pretty easy
to convince your guide to change the plan. You pay his wages, after all.
