And the ones you can get at departures (referring
to Sandy's note) are just as bad plus you get the added risk of an
illegal pickup and possible hassle even to the point of violence.

I do this every time Tchiowa, and I've *never* had a minutes trouble,
but I *do* pick the cab I want and a respectable looking driver. As you
say some of the cabs at a the taxi stand outside arrivals are in
terrible condition and you have no say as to which cab you end up in.

Hello -

Hoping to get some help from Bangkok savvy folks here.

Lastly, does the Sky Train or Subway have a station at BKK that i can
use to get into Silom?

TIA for your kind replies

take the taxi stand taxis for 250-300 bahts .
the socalled limos are old jalopies not worth 800. some are 20-30 years
old .
some of the public taxis are a bit tatty so just take a new one.

800 for a private car (like Thai Limo) for example is about right. They
have London Cabs that are really nice and they would be about that ora
tad less. I forget the name of the company, but they have a booth in

"London Cabs"?????? You don't mean those black Austins by chance ?

No, I mean London Cabs. That's what they are called. They're made by a
company called "London Cabs". Ever been to either London or Bangkok? If
you had, you'd know what I mean.

Cars are manufactured by a company called "London Cabs" ?

Yes. They have a franchise in the US, too. That's their name.

And 99 times out of a 100 you won't. But on occasion you will get
hassled by the security guards. I have seen them stop a cab that just
picked someone up and make them get out. And you'll recall the killings
a couple of years back where tourists picked up at the airport where
robbed and killed by taxi drivers. All were picked up at departures (so
that the cab wasn't registered at the airport in any fashion). Plus you
get the added joy of lugging your bags up to the departure floor and
outside.

All to say 1 USD. Sorry, but I can't see how that adds up. I'll grant
you that a whole lot of people do it. I did it a few times. But I don't
any more. It just doesn't make sense to me. After a 20 hour flight from
the US or Europe I'd just as soon pay $10-20 and get a nice private
car. Worth every penny of it, IMO.

I have seen a couple bad enough where I refused to use them. Driver
didn't like it but the taxi stand folks understood. Of course the ones
with the bad brakes and missing shock absorbers you won't know about
until after you're headed down the road.

So we are talking about those black Austins after all.

The ones I've seen in Bangkok are either blue or white. I read
somewhere that they cost 3,500,000 each to buy here.
