The inside 'courtyard' rooms in old Spanish hostals etc. can be
suprisingly comfortable even in hot weather...

In the second Italian lesson I took we learnt how to ask for a hotel room -
facing into the courtyard.

and English breakfast.

Don't give away all Europe's secrets. IME the chance of having air
conditioned accommodation in Greece is very low. OTOH you can open the
windows at night.

It's actually becoming much more common these days in Greece than it used
to be, although at the time of year I normally go (May or September) it's
often not switched on (or necessary). If one does happen to hit a very
hot spell though, A/C can be a boon - opening windows doesn't work if the
outside temperature is just as hot as inside!

It does if there is the typical cool breeze blowing off the sea or
katabatic
wind.

In my experience in the Aegean (if that's what we're talking about), the
prevailing northerly airstream, which normally blows from May to September,
is more important than any local land and sea breezes.

Meltemi.

Not really the wind is strong during the afternoon and drops to almost

nothing
in late afternoon. When it gets dark you get sea breezes.

Sometimes I've wished it would do that. Last year we stayed a few days on
Andros where there was a continuous moderate breeze in the daytime which
increased after dark to a howling gale - always from the same direction.
These were no sea breezes.

That's what keeps the temperatures down on the Greek islands in the
summer and makes A/C generally unnecessary. Occasionally during the
summer though, the wind reverses and blows from the south straight from
the Sahara (dumping tons of red dust everywhere in the process). Then the
temperatures can really soar and air conditioning becomes quite desirable
- or so I have found.

Other than a hell hole room with one tiny window in the main town of
Karpathos, we have never needed air conditioning at night anywhere in
Greece.

When the temperature gets to the high 30s one can only maintain one's body
temperature by continually sweating. It doesn't often happen, but I have
known it in Greece, and when it does I find A/C is quite welcome.

Wouldn't it be better to leave the mini-bar plugged in and leave the
door open?

And your wallet out on the bedside table too, for good measure. But,

for
those who prefer their privacy over a minibar, I'd go with Martin's
suggestion, Caths.

Perhaps she thinks that leaving the door of the minibar open, will cool
off the room.....

LOL Brilliant.

The answer to Mixi's "heat" problems: he should live *in* a minibar...!!!

Probably because, until the past few summers, Europe has never NEEDED
it! (A great many locations in the U.S. didn't either - not really -
but most of Europe has always had a milder climate than much of the
North American continent.) FWIW, Europe is certainly far AHEAD of the
U.S. in terms of preserving the ecology.
I have been to Europe on four different trips, two in May, one in June
and one in July. We never had air conditioned rooms and never needed it.

I agree - although the location of a hotel room or two made sleeping
difficult due to noise from the open window, I managed just fine without
air-conditioning. My "past few summers" remark referred to the heat
waves that reportedly led to some deaths in Paris.

2003?

Probably. (It's astonishing how quickly time passes, the older one gets!)

I think that was her assumption. (There are times when I really despair
of the intelligence of my fellow-Americans!)

On Sun, 15 Mar 2009 10:47:12 -0400, in rec.travel.europe, Cathy L
arranged some electrons, so they looked like this:

... I would have to agree with no going in the summer. I have found that
... Europe is way behind the States with the use of air conditioning.

If Cathy and Bill would just stay on the bus they would have all the
AC they need.

I can assure you I am not Mixi. BTW I could see hydrogen burning again during
the shuttle launch on Sunday.

Me too.
