Looking for budget hotels near Florida keys and Everglades
I know there are many 2-3 start hotels in Miami area, but these are
all adding an unncessary 40-50 miles to where I want to be, i.e key west and everglades. Are there any 2-3 star hotels nearer? I usually book through hotwire, but dont mind trying individual chain websites if I knew they had a location I am interested in. |

Did you already check this: http://www.usa-lodging.com/motels/florida/KeyWest.htm I didn't see the start of this thread, but there is a LOT of miles from KW to Everglades. http://www.floridakeys.com/floridake...mmodations.htm lists them by area Rather than 2-3 stars ... What's your price range ?? What do want to do there ? Go to Everglades park ? Drive thru alligator alley ? In Key Biscayne ( just at the entrance to Key Biscayne) is a Hampton Inn ( on Rickenbacker Causeway) that we stay at every yr. (on a map , Rt 95 begins right in front of it for reference.) From there to Everglades park = Total Distance: 38 miles In Key West, nothing will be cheap. Before booking a room there, figure where on the island you want to be. If you have a cheap room , 2-3 stars means nothing - think about where on the island you want to be, and get a room there. It will be a hassle getting to/from things that you want to do as parking is a big hassle. We've stayed at the Pier House and Ocean Key a few times at the end of Duval St ( at Duval + Greene St) Then drop off the car 'cause you can walk to all the tourist areas/bars from there - or ask up front how much for parking per day. Take the old town trolley for a tourist ride around the island. If you're staying there and WANT to party, Sloppy Joe's will keep you busy through the night. Having a car is really a hassle in KW. IF you can find a place to park it, it'll cost you. If not and you have to park on the street, then you're gonna be running back/forth to feed a meter. If you're gonna stay a few days - turn in the rental and use a cab. If you aren't a drinker and don't mind driving there/back, halfway down the Keys ( at about mm 78 - 78 miles from the end of Rt 1 in KW) in Islamorada is a Hampton Inn we've stayed at. Great restaurant next door ( Lazy Days). There are a lot of motels along the way , but a lot of the old/cheap motels like "the Pelican" are awful: little ants on the toothbrush in the morning !! Note - if you stay in the mid-keys and drive back from KW in the early AM, be careful driving back 'cuz some of these little towns have cops just waiting for you to speed thru. The cops have nothing else to do AND it raises revenue for them. Posted speed limit is ~35 mph and, trust me, with no one else on the road, the tendency is to drive 50-60 mph. A bit closer, friends of mine stay here every January ( to "get cozy" for a few days) and like it. http://www.conchkeycottages.com/florida_resort.htm for rates directions/map at http://www.conchkeycottages.com/getting.htm. Conch Key Cottages is at mile marker 62. fyi: Mile Markers begin south of Florida City on Rt 1with number 127 and run down to 0 in Key West. Once you're in the Keys, U.S. 1 becomes the Overseas Highway. The best way to get around is to know the mile marker of your destination. Look for the little green mile-marker signs on the side of the highway. Everything on the Keys refers to mm numbers. Bobb |

We've stayed at two hotels in Homestead, which put us pretty close to the north end of the Everglades (early enough to get there for first light photography at the Anhinga Trail, for example). You can also get to Shark Valley from here but it's about an hour drive and staying in Miami is about 30 minutes closer. If trying to get to Shark Valley early in the AM you might consider staying at the casino-hotel nearby, I think it's Micosukee or something similar (spelling probably off). For the south end of the Glades you'll probably want to stay at the lodge at Flamingo. Key West is a different matter, several hours down the road. Can't help you with lodging there. Bill |

There are motels in Homestead/Florida City, right on US 1. The Comfort Inn where we stayed is quite nice, and the others near it also looked good. The request for 2-3 stars suggests someone shopping on price. IIRC, the Florida City Comfort Inn is around $50 per night. In Key Largo, expect to pay around $100. Marathon (mm50) may also be in the same general price range; I've not priced the Hampton Inn in the Islamorada area. There's also some places in the Big Pine Key area (mm25ish) that will be a fairly short distance from Key West and probably slightly cheaper before parking costs in KW are factored in. On mile markers, they're not really as well marked as one would have expected them to be. In addition to the green markers along the road, also keep an eye on the large concrete powerline poles, as there's sometimes markers on these too. -hh |
