They could be working during some of the days - so any recommendations on
things to do in Phoenix on your own?

Go wander around downtown Scottsdale or the University of Arizona campus at
Tempe.

Tempe = Arizona State University
Tucson = University of Arizona

I'd follow Hatunen's advice and drive down to Tucson. See the
Saguaro. Visit the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum. Maybe hit the
missions south of town. Might as well stop at Casa Grande on the way
down to or back or back from Tucson. And eat fish burrito at Los
Betos.

Well, maybe not the last one. I have a craving for those things, but
I think it's a rare affliction. ;-)

Catch a Cactus League spring training game (major league baseball pre-
season).

Catch a Suns game (if you can score tickets).

Head for the desert if the wildflowers are blooming, especially if the
Mexican Gold poppies are out.
