Default skiers: I need advice regarding Truckee, California

Anybody skiers here familiar with truckee, california? I heard that
truckee is a good city to stay in for those who want to check out
several area ski resorts. Does anybody have thoughts about truckee
motels and eateries? How reliable/frequent is the public shuttle
transport to ski resorts from truckee?

It's a great little town with shuttles to Northstar, Alpine Meadows, and
Squaw Valley. There used to be a shuttle to Sugar Bowl as well, but I'm
not sure it's still available. Their hospital has the most experience
with ski related and avalanche related injuries, and are very efficient.

There aren't a lot of hotels in Truckee, and very few in the downtown
area where you could walk to restaurants. There is the Truckee Trolley,
"http://www.tahoesbest.com/Transportation/truckee_trolley.htm" but it's
really only for skiers, not for getting from hotels to downtown.

I used to stay at the Star Hotel, where I knew the owner, but it's not a
hotel anymore apparently.

Most of the restaurants have changed since when I used stay in Truckee
motels (now we rent cabins and cook), but Squeeze Inn is still there
apparently and was very good for breakfast. Wagon Train Coffee Shop is
still there, and it wasn't great.

Is truckee accessible by Amtrak or the airport?
