I can't compare, but we are very satisfied with Qantas, both on
'short' domestic trips and on three long-hauls from London to Oz and
vice versa. If it helps, we prefer them (a lot) over British Airways.
What we especially appreciate is being waited on by real people instead
of robots. Other features have been mentioned elsewhere (LCD screens,
snack/water bag, toothbrush/eye-pads, etc.).

like fawlty towers. never again. between nz & oz freedom air wins hands

Interesting. Last time I flew to LA (via AirNZ) the food was actually
great (but the service was crap, as you have said).

Last time I flew to North America, the whole thing was in a mess after
Brierley's had run the airline into the ground.....and forced the
Government to take it over.

Up to 9/11 and the Brierley's mess, I'd agree with you.

But after the airline nearly went bust, I did notice a change in the
service. On two trips to Asia - Business Class - the service was fairly
ho-hum compared to what I had gotten used to.

I haven't been on a trip for a while now as I have been dodging them. With
all the post 9/11 carry-on, the whole things has just become too much
hassle to bother with....and more expensive with it.

I'm looking at a trip to the UK and Canada for 3 people....and the airport
security charges are over NZ$1,000 altogether.

Seems to me that those with a NZ allegiance are voting for Air NZ and those
with an Oz allegiance are voting with QANTAS
somewhat pointless exercise really

Qantas may not be perfect but after what Air New Zealand did to Ansett
Australia, I will never take then by principle.

Kindest regards

Or what the Australian govt did to Air NZ that gave it no option on what it
did to Ansett...

Cheers,

On any flight of more than a few hours it's outrageous that people
should be stuck in a plane without a personal LCD entertanment center
and it was clear that AirNZ were being *really* cheap in every area.

I flew Thai Business class to AKL the other day - 747 - no personal screens
even in Business Class!
