Hey folks. I'm looking for a reasonable (sub $1000) ticket to NZ leaving in
Jan. I can find lots, but they all have a 90 day limit on them. I'm
planning on staying for a year. Anyone know why the airlines set up the
tickets that way, and more importantly, know how I can find a fare in my
range for a full year?

Thanks!

A post-script.

I just returned from Fiji (where it rained for a week in the "dry"
season:-) so I checked out the Air Pacific site at
http://www.airpacific.com/ . It might be worth checking with them; they
fly Vancouver-Honolulu, Honolulu-Nadi(Fiji), LAX-Nadi and Nadi to
various NZ locations. My only proviso there would be checking climatic
conditions in January, but it would be a nice holiday en-route to go
Vancouver-Honolulu-Nadi-NZ.

Current exchange rate is about US$1=FJ$0.56. They presently have some
very cheap specials between Fiji, Oz and NZ.

Cheers, Alan

Air NZ are generally amongst the cheapest for LAX to AKL. They often run
'promotions' and specials - but so far ahead - and valid for a year!!!. They
have you over the proverbial barrel I suspect!

Right you are, I have a 12 month visa for a working holiday in NZ.
Realizing that I can only get a ticket 9 months out, I've been trying to
find one sub $1000 from the US, that I can change later to stay a full
year...not finding much on the usual suspects, Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia,
Air New Zealand, Qantas, etc.

Thanks!

Your welcome.

Suggest you visit your local bonded travel agent and have a talk to
him/her.

You should also phone the likes of Air NZ and Qantas etc and discuss
the situation with them as it may be possible [should be] they write
up a ticket using an open return which would be more the case.

Have a look at the various websites regarding Conditions of issue.
Some may state tickets may be changed but $x to do so in which case,
it may be a waste of money....

Don't forget to purchase your comprenhensive travel insurance at the
same time you purchase your ticket.

Airfares are only available for 365 days out so Jan 2005 to Jan 2006
will not be available.

However:
Firstly, you will need a visa to stay for 6 months.
After that, you can extend it for a total of 3 more months making a
total of NINE MONTHS at which time you will have to leave.
That is, unless you have any other kind of visa i.e. working holiday,
student etc which permits you to stay 12 months or more to begin with.

You will *not* find a one year ticket for less than $1000 period at
anytime.

Wacheena - if Seattle is an option - then consider flying out of
Vancouver! Hubby and I just booked a one year open ended ticket (to
Brisbane but Auckland was also an option for the same fare) for $1360
Canadian on Cathay Pacific. We used Pacesetter Travel out of
Vancouver.

They have a website you can search fares.
