What are my options for taking a ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn (one-way)
on the cheap?

The ferry company pages I've seen have a bunch of "cabin" options, but
what do I need a cabin for? It's only a couple of hours. A seat like
on a train would be fine.

What the heck if you get a cabin for nothing ?
5 sec search gave me 26 € in august.

I just went up to the counter and paid the fare. WTP?

I went on the Hydrofoil, so I don't know if it's like Greece, where the
hydrofoil gets you a guaranteed seat (due to regulations), but the ferry
only gets you on board to fight it out for a seat in the economy lounge,
with the losers ending up sitting on deck on the (not very comfy) benches or
paying extra to upgrade to the "first" class lounge which ends up costing
more than the hydrofoil would have done (without the 60% time saving).

Oh and it was in August, which even if it is the peak season, still wasn't
very busy

Hydrofoil was the magic word. With that google found me Linda Line, which
gave what I needed.

Booking in advance gave a 10% discout, btw. And our first experience of
Tallinn was the magnificent Linnahall. In the rain.

-FYI, I like Tallink's Star and Superstar best. Fastest+cheapest
"real ships", 2hrs one-way. A bit factory-like feeling, but if your
main thing is to get from H to T then you don't need fancy
white-linen restaurants.

When I looked they were more expensive than the faster Linda Line
(which even had free wifi).
