Tue 03/06/08 16:05 - The very first hydrogen fuelling station along a
highway in Europe opened on Tuesday in Belgium, near Brussels on the
E19 motorway in Ruisbroek (direction of Paris). It is pilot project.

The hydrogen fuelling station is a pilot project by Total Petroleum
and BMW. There is only one fuel pump, but this is not a problem. At
the moment only BMW 7 H2s can fuel at the station.
(VRT)

There are only 4 cars of this series in Belgium: all of them belonging
to the European Commission.

The fuelling station tank holds 17,000 litres of compressed liquid
hydrogen, stored at -253 degrees centigrade.

The pilot project is costing €1.8 million. The companies stress that
they think it is important to invest in the future.

Hydrogen still presents a few major problems. It takes up a lot of
room for storage and on a full tank you can only drive 200 kilometres.

Flemish Minister of Innovation, Patricia Ceysens, was present at the
opening.

Just curious but does it use any energy to keep it stored at a temperature
of -253 degrees centigrade?

Just how long does it take to refill (or exchange) a tank of
hydrrogen? If it takes longer than 5-10 minutes, I wouldn't bet
on its commercial success! How far can an ordinary automobile
go on a tank of hydrogen. Electric cars are proud of their
ability to do 150 miles or 200km between charges but that's
uncompetitive.

You could Google to get the answers, but to save you the trouble:

A big BMW eh? A range of 150 miles and no indication of how long
a fill takes, thanks but no thanks! Even if the base price of a
BMW looks doable, you usually have to buy 25% more in
accessories.

So you didn't read the article, then? It stated "8 minutes" as the fill
time for the hydrogen tank.

I essentially gave up when I found it was a large BMW and the
range was pitiful!
