Sun-protecting headwear for Egypt
Hello,
I will be going to Cairo and its surroundings this summer and am thinking about which headwear to buy. On the one hand I believe that a pith helmet would be the best possible headwear in terms of sun protection (distance between head and headwear, ventilation, can be soaked in water, etc.), but on the other hand I am afraid that it could be considered offensive and attract unwanted attention due to its association with colonialism. What is your experience? Many thanks and best wishes, David |

Sun-protecting headwear for Egypt
I will be going to Cairo and its surroundings this summer and am
thinking about which headwear to buy. Hello David. You're absolutely right about wearing a cap or a hat to protect against the sun. I agree with you about the advantages of a hat, however, DO NOT wear a pith helmet, because there are far easier ways to make yourself ridiculous! But there's help, because since colonial times, time didn't come to a stand still. Therefore, my solution is the Tilley Hat, I've got two of them, one for sunprotection on holidays, and one for use when I go with my kayak. The people at Tilley take their job of making a hat serious, and all the advantages you mentioned (head - headwear distance, ventilation, watersoaking) are there, just read there website and judge for yourself, http://www.tilley.com/ By the way, I don't get paid by them, I just like their hats :-). Regards, John. And have a good time in Cairo, although Cairo can and will be tough in summer. |
